Reason for nomination:
This tree is one of a line of 10 magnificent veteran trees which stand on the Roding valley recreation ground north of Roding Lane. They once formed an old hedgeline and are all that remains following the expansion of Buckhurst Hill in the 1930s. Of the line, 8 are hornbeams, which are easily the most impressive collection of hornbeam pollards recorded to date. Judgeing by their size and decay features the trees have to be at least 250 years old, but they may well be much older.
Remarks & Tree condition:
Height 12.20m. Hollow with exposed trunk.
