Reason for nomination:
"Its sheer size and beautiful setting make this a very impressive tree. And it's such a lovely shape. I also like its historic connection with Lady Ibbetson and Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee" Lucy Davis "
Remarks & Tree condition:
This fine Oak tree stands on a piece of green in front of the 13th Century St. Mary the Virgin Church and the 15th Century Marriage Feast Room. This room has been used for more than 500 years for brides and bridegrooms of the village to feast with their friends and relatives. A metal plaque a the foot of the tree reads "planted by Lady Selwyn Ibbetson in honor of the Queens Jubilee 1887" This is probably my favourite spot in the District and I think I know the area as well as anyone having been lucky enough to have spent the last 15 years as the Council's Countryside Manager. This oak tree stands in the perfect setting framing both the ancient feast room and church. It is a tree that has always fascinated and intrigued me and been the point of many a discussion of a guided walk. How is it so big? when its plaque says it was planted in 1887 - just 120 years ago. I have always meant to try and find out more about the planting and always hoped there maybe some old photo somewhere marking the occasion that may give a clue?." Paul Hewitt
